Bethany R. Granata was 18 years old when her life was lost to an accidental overdose. But Bethany's story is about so much more than the circumstances of her death. Bethany was a daughter, sister, friend, cheerleader, and a young woman who brought her own special energy to the people around her. She had an amazing voice, and those who knew her could often hear her singing. She loved sports—especially hockey—and was a devoted Pittsburgh Penguins fan. Bethany also knew what it felt like to struggle. She experienced the pain of bullying and understood the toll that stress and difficult experiences can take on a young person's mental and emotional well-being. Perhaps because she understood what it felt like to need support herself, Bethany cared deeply about others. She had a special place in her heart for the underdog—for people who felt left out, misunderstood, or simply needed someone to believe in them. She wanted people to feel seen, supported, and accepted. That compassion continues to shape the work that carries her name. After losing Bethany, our family wanted her life to create hope and opportunity for other young people. That desire became the foundation for Little Wings of Hope and the Bethany R. Granata Endowed Scholarship Fund at Caron Treatment Centers. Today, Bethany's legacy reminds us why prevention and wellness must go beyond simply telling young people what not to do. Young people need knowledge, but they also need connection, healthy ways to manage stress, trusted people to turn to, and the confidence to ask for help when they need it. Every young person deserves to be seen, supported, and given the opportunity to build a healthier future.
